Towel Day is May 25

Don’t forget! May 25 is Towel Day. Remember to carry your towel!

I have to admit I’m not quite sure who suggested that I read “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. What I do know is that I have bonded with many a friend (Hi Jeem!) over that book and I happen to have a rather spiffy copy that includes other books from the series. It even has a rather nice ribbon attached, which means I’m never looking for a bookmark when re-reading it. Also, I know I first read it over a summer when I was home from college and living in the utter bliss of a happy job and few (very few) responsibilities.

I remember not loving the book on the first page, but adoring it as soon as I read the passage about towels. You see, I have a towel that isn’t a towel. It is better than a towel, softer than a towel, but just as useful as a towel. It is Blankie. Laugh all you will, but Blankie has been the most useful item I have ever owned. Blankie is cool in hot weather and warm in cool weather. Blankie dries tears better than tissue and gives comfort like no comforter ever could. Blankie can be practical and clean up messes, assist in holding a hot teacup without letting me be burned, or wrap itself snugly around my neck when a scarf is needed but not available. So, it was with great interest that I read the passage on towels and realised that I have had a towel all along!

So, in honour of Towel Day (or, as I prefer to think of it, Blankie Day) I will proudly carry my towel, smile maniacally at those who stare, and giggle to myself. If nothing else, I should have a little extra room around me when walking on the sidewalk as people scatter to be as far away from the crazy lady as possible.
